The 33 turns 35 years old! Alfa Romeo's compact model was previewed to sales representatives from the entire world (over 3000 people) in an unprecedented marathon event organised between April 23 and May 5th of 1983 at the Sporting Club of Monte Carlo. Then on the 1st of June it was officially shown to the state rapresentats during an event organised near Rome, in Vicolo Valdina (back then Alfa Romeo was still a state owned enterprise). Although the mechanics were inherited from the Alfasud it replaced, the styling (that we think of now as being so characteristic of the '8os) was at the time fresh and bold for a compact car, and the bigger cars in Alfa's range were to follow soon the same direction. Among the many innovations introduced with the production of the 33, its worth mentioning the complete robotisation of the assembly line, an extraordinary technological step forward for the automotive industry. Robots were already used for the assembly of Giulietta, but for the production of the 33 model were used no less than 32 robots for the body welding and 8 for the floor welding, thus making the Pomigliano d'Arco factory one of the most advanced assembly lines at the time in Europe. It was also the car on which Philips experimented for the first time with the CD-player, presenting a prototype in 1983 and the production version 18 months later of what was to become a must have piece of in-car entertainment. A modern and highly appreciated machine, proven by the almost one million units produced until 1994, making it Alfa's most successful model by total production numbers after the Alfasud. When I'm thinking of the 33 today I can't imagine a nicer example than my friend's @andrei.p beautifully restored 1.7 Quadrifoglio Verde Pemanent 4 of 1991, pictured in the gallery above.
